Causes of facial pigmentation and how to reduce blemishes on the face

Skin blemishes are a cosmetic problem that causes negative psycho-emotional effects and impacts the quality of life of the vast majority of older adults. These blemishes result from pigmentary alterations in the production of melanin, a coloring substance present in the cells of living beings, which gives skin its color. The most frequent cause of hyperpigmentation is exposure to ultraviolet rays, but other factors can alter melanin production, such as hormonal changes, aging, chemical agents, acne, and some inflammatory processes. Among the most common types of pigmented blemishes are:

  • Solar lentigines: Brown spots caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays.
  • Age spots: Flat, oval-shaped areas, ranging in color from light to dark brown, caused by sun exposure over the years. They appear on the backs of the hands, the tops of the feet, the face, the shoulders, and the upper back.
  • Melasma and chloasma: Dark spots that affect women, especially during and after pregnancy. They are most common on the face, but can affect other parts of the body.
  • The aftereffects of acne: Excess melanin produced by the body, as a form of protection, when the body recognizes inflammation caused by acne.
  • Ancanthosis nigricans: Dark patches that appear on the neck (and sometimes also on the armpits, elbows, knees, and sides). These require laboratory testing because they can be a warning sign of diabetes or prediabetes, due to a certain resistance to insulin and carbohydrates.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: These dark spots appear in the groin area and can result from inflammation caused by friction from pants or underwear, or from shaving. When they appear in the armpits, they can be caused by chemicals present in some deodorants, which oxidize with heat.

The Cosmelan Method

Until the emergence of a highly specific treatment called the ” Pink Intimate System ,” aesthetic medicine relied on lasers for treating blemishes. However, this was a painful procedure. The Pink Intimate Cosmelan , on the other hand, is a painless method that involves applying a mask with a dual mechanism of action: a corrective effect (eliminating hyperpigmentation) and a regulating effect that controls the overproduction of melanin. It is a complete treatment consisting of a single session at the aesthetic center followed by a home maintenance regimen. First, the mask, applied by a professional, is left on for eight to twelve hours, depending on the skin type and sensitivity. The patient removes it at home. Then, 48 hours later, the patient begins the follow-up phase at home, which consists of applying maintenance creams and sunscreen in three sessions.

Hydrafacial treatment

As a complement to the Cosmelan method for treating hyperpigmentation, individuals may consider the Hydrafacial procedure to achieve fresh, healthy, radiant, and glowing skin. Hydrafacial is a non-invasive method for cleansing, extracting impurities, and exfoliating the face, which helps improve skin hydration and reduce the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, excess oil, and wrinkles. It consists of a deep cleansing to remove impurities and the application of a serum containing antioxidant and hydrating vitamins.
